Echo
Expectations based on the name
A horror/thriller set in a desolate space where all that is there is the person trapped there and their echoes or something where the main theme repeats.
Response and Analysis
Certain plot points cause certain reactions, such as the initial scam, her smoking outside her house, when she gets caught by her brother, and when her brother cycles away.
Open ended allows the audience to interpret what happens to Kaz: if she ever gets caught, if her brother ended up meeting their dads fate, etc.
The ECHO referred to in the name is Kaz living through her memories of finding out how her dad died, but instead of making it just a regular memory she instead uses the moment to relive in order to con people around her, so she can - I assume - buy cigarettes.
Jump cuts are used to display the emotions that Kaz feels but also work to jar us and make it feel unreal, makes it feel like a con - our suspicions are later confirmed when Kaz finally asks the taxi driver to pull over.
The use of mise-en-scene in the first scene with all of the black coats and red bags create contrast and make the viewer focus on Kaz as soon as she comes on screen (in her green hoodie).
I like how the storyline uses her 'echo' at three different points, it is in-keeping with what was expected but not, so I quite like that use of difference in prediction.
