The Fly
Expectations based on the name
A short film that follows either a literal fly or follows someone who feels like a fly (someone who feels invisible) – some form of comedy.
Response and Analysis
Very much dark comedy.
Diegetic sound used creatively, the normal, everyday noises are heightened to make the audience feel the anxiety felt by the get-a-way driver while also making the audience feel the tension of this mission. Similarly, the airbag is also used to increase our anxiety, as he can't drive away with an airbag blocking him.
Pace of editing speeds up when the alarm goes off, showing the urgency and necessity of turning it off.
Foreshadowing through the toothpick in his mouth as it eventually injures him during his fight with the fly.
Off screen sound allows us to understand the things we cannot/do not see like the actual robbery. Use of the Kuleshov effect.
Lots of clever things with the budget with the only real expensive thing being the car.
Lots of shots with his watch on the show, showing time is of the essence, lots of importance put on mise-en-scene. Even though we can't see it very well, we can still tell it is there.
Sound of the sirens and the helicopter getting closer at the end show that they have been caught.
Personally, I don't particularly like this short film as it causes me to get quite stressed with all of the heightened sounds, however I can definitely see how it appeals and how it works.
