The Ellington Kid

Expectations based on the name

Some kind of coming-of-age film that follows either the 'Ellington Kid' or someone who once knew the kid.

Response and Analysis

Feels real, featuring real characters in a real space. With a story seemingly based on the kind of friend who likes winding you up, or the existence of urban myths.

The camera focus on specific instruments, like the knives, or other objects, like the burger, brings our attention to specific parts of the story - this focus on the food adds to the punchline - ‘why do you think I’m only eating the chips’.

Story gets told through the flashbacks, a more serious and suspense filled narrative, to the comedy of the two friends in the kebab shop. Three act structure.

1) The friends eating and one begins telling a story

2) The story // flashback of what happens to the kid

3) The punchline and a subtle smirk from the kebab shop owner making us doubt the truth, is the truly burger something else other than meat?

CU of the knife at the very beginning, creates a sense of danger, violence, and tension from the very beginning. Can make assumptions about the storyline/rumour from the start with him chopping up the meat aggressively.

Can hear the echoes of the people who stabbed the kid while he runs away, effective and sets the scene through sound. The kid runs in an enclosed, seemingly never-ending, tunnel. There is some subtle slow motion as the kid is running away because he can’t go fast.
